Black Rhinos in Ngorongoro Crater : Black rhinos are among of the wildlife that people found very difficult to meet them when they visit in national parks. This is very common in our country as well as other countries. Unfortunately, it is a good luck that in Tanzania we have some. They are very rare but visitors and tourists can find them in the national parks. The most common park that is believed to have these wildlife is Ngorongoro national park. Despite the fact that they are very rare but in Ngorongoro you may find some of them. Black rhinos in Ngorongoro crater national park are among very rare wildlife species but have been of great significance. They have brought big impact in Tanzania especially on the tourism sector.
Ngorongoro crater national park which formally was the part of the wide and big national park, Serengeti which lies on the north-western part of Tanzania. Ngorongoro conservation area is covering about 8292 square kilometers.
The crater is one among pulling factors for the crowd of people to visit the area. The Ngorongoro crater is one of the largest world volcanic calderas and it was formed about some 2 to 3 million years ago. Despite being existing for a lot of years, the Ngorongoro crater have still remained unfolded and unbroken since ever.
There are many perspectives about the existence of the crater though the common one is that it is believed to be formed and existed due to the large volcanic eruption that exploded and collapsed on itself. Currently, there are several wildlife including herbivores that are feeding on the short green pastures that covers the crater. Some of the wildlife are the buffalos, zebras, wildebeest, gazelles and elands. Also, there are some other big 5 animals found on the crater area. These animals are found on the swamps that are sided around the crater. These animals includes waterbucks, elephants, bushbucks and other unique animals such as the black rhinos. There is an outstanding number of those former animals except the latter which are very rare in Africa. These rhinos are residing happily on the area despite the presence of predators like jackals, hyenas and leopards that thrive around the crater and in the middle of the pockets hunting for these animals. This is where even the great number of lions are found.
Back to the unique wildlife in Ngorongoro conservation area, black rhinos these mammals have proved to be one of the attractive factors to the tourists when they visit and spend their moment in the area. The black rhinos are one of the species that are commonly natives in the eastern and southern part of Africa that includes the states of Kenya, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Botswana, Swaziland, Namibia plus the luckiest ones that are found in Ngorongoro crater.
Despite being called black rhinos, their colors is varying from brown to grey color. They are also named hook-lipped rhinoceros. Scientifically, the black rhinos can be placed and classified in Animalia as the kingdom, their phyla is chordata which belongs to the class of mammals. The order of these black rhinos is perissodactyla. Their genus name is decorous and their specie name is d – bicornis. This is what is distinguishing them from other mammals such as the white rhinos.
What surprises here is that the word white for the white rhinos have neither correlation nor relationship with their exact color. In fact, it has nothing to do with their actual appearance but it is just the misinterpretation done by the African word that means wide. This mostly differentiate their lips that the black rhinos have the lips that is quite different from that of the white rhinos.
Also, the black rhinos can be differentiated from the white ones in case of their alternative or other names. Since the black rhinoceros are called hook-lipped rhinos, the white rhinoceros are also called the square-lipped rhinoceros.
The black rhinos have been grouped into various categories. Sometimes are said to be classified in the group of critically endangered animals. Also, the some of them are grouped as vulnerable mammals especially the south and western ones. Then, some of the subspecies of these black rhinos have been declared non extinct especially by the authorities such as IUCN.
The black rhinoceros that resides in Ngorongoro are solitary having the earlier strong bond between the mothers and their calves. The male black rhinos are said to be sleeping longer than the female black rhinos. This have been proved by several researches and found to be one of the astonishing facts.
Also, the elder black rhinoceros are very powerful having the tube shaped ears that are able to rotate freely in all directions.
